The weather in the Bay is notoriously moody, with sun, rain and hail being conditions we aren’t surprised to see all within the same day. Luckily, Bay Area breweries have us covered for every type of weather this weekend might bring us: from tropical, fruity IPAs fitting for sunny beach days to rich, chocolatey pints perfect for sitting inside watching raindrops pelt against a window, you’ll be sure to find something to fit your every mood.
Armistice Brewing Company— In honor of the Warriors making it back into the NBA playoffs, Richmond based Armistice has unleashed the Golden State golden ale. Showcasing floor-malted barley from Alameda’s own Admiral Maltings and blending them with East Kent Goldings hops, the result is a refreshing, 6 percent alcohol ale that is $1 off during playoff games.
Novel Brewing Company — Staying in character with the literary theme of this Oakland brewery is the Bestseller IPA, a dry-bodied ale that highlights tropical and citrus flavors. At the nose, you’ll get aromas of grapefruit and papaya, with more flavors of tropical fruits opening up as it hits the palate. This 6.7 percent alcohol brew is made with classic Citra, Mosaic and Azacca hops, and is a fresh and sippable option for any day of the week.
Loma Brewing Company — Over in Los Gatos, you can now try an American porter made with 60 pounds of toasted coconut, called the Patsy Trot. (I won’t spoil the reference this name alludes to, but think Terry Gilliam in Monty Python.) Nutty and milky flavors come together in this 6 percent alcohol brew to intermingle with dark chocolate notes, creating a delectable combination that fits together like Almond and Joy.
GravSouth Brew Co. — Another dark, chocolatey option for those who have a taste for all things rich and full-bodied is the Imperial Chocolate Stout from this Cotati brewery. At a whopping 11.5 percent alcohol, this beer is hopped with Fuggle, lending earthy aromas that shine when featured in darker styles of beer. You may get notes of toffee with each sip, but chocolate is truly the main character of this brew.
Cellarmaker Brewing Company — If you’re in the mood for a tropical IPA but don’t want to trek over to Oakland, Cellarmaker has a new option for you in the city. Today, they introduced their new IPA, Cloudy with a Chance of Dobis. This 6.3 percent alcohol ale is made with 100 percent Citra hops to showcase flavors of tropical fruit such as passionfruit, mango and pineapple.
