San Francisco Beer Week 2019 kicks off February 1 and has grown to nearly 1,000 beer-centric events around the Bay Area. Much like grocery shopping when hungry, sifting through and deciding what events to attend can be difficult, especially when thirsty.
Though by no means comprehensive, we’ve assembled a shortlist of some of the unique events that jumped out at us. For the entire list with fully sortable (by region, type and brewery) events, check out the SF Beer Week website.
Brut Fest from the Birthplace of the Brut IPA: Just what it sounds like. From November 2017 when Social Kitchen brewer Kim Sturdavant created the hoppy Champagne-compared beer style, the road to the style taking off has seen mom-and-pop small batch breweries up to Sierra Nevada, New Belgium and Sam Adams all taking stabs at the style. The brewery is celebrating the style at the place it was invented, with a few variations from Social Kitchen to be on tap, as well as some other examples.
Sirwisa Am Pro – Hops For Housing 2019: A staple of SFBW and now onto its sixth rendition, the Sirwisa Am Pro – Hops for Housing will feature 30 different one-off beers, produced by the collaboration of home brewers teaming up with local professional breweries to create some of the most unique concoctions to hit the Bay. All beers featured this year will include ingredients from Alameda-based Admiral Maltings and cultures from San Jose-based GigaYeast. All proceeds go to benefitting the Family House, an “independent non-profit organization providing temporary housing, physical comfort and emotional support to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital,” according to the event page.
Sessions Beer Dinner with 21st Amendment, Brooklyn Brewery & Funkwerks: What event allows you the chance to sip on beers from New York, Colorado and San Francisco, while grubbing on a fine five-course meal from a well-renowed San Francisco establishment? The answer is this event, which showcases a culinary pairing that is not to be missed.
From the Border to the Bay: At Diving Dog Brewhouse in the East, the team is putting together a showcase of San Diego breweries in one stop. Check out the likes of Bagby, Fall, Thorn Street, Amplified Ales, Modern Times, Pizza Port, Lost Abbey, Coronado, Stone, AleSmith, Port, and more to be announced.
Clear vs. Hazy IPA: Head over to The Hop Grenade in Concord where the local beer bar will be hosting a blind IPA tasting: Clear vs. Hazy. A flight of six beers — three hazy and three clear — will be offered, with participants casting a vote to determine which is the crowd favorite!
Barrel Constrictor Release Party: Alpha Acid Brewing in Belmont is known for their creative takes on just about any beer style you can imagine, with the hoppiest, the most sour and the thickest of the darkest beers never scaring them from doing an interpretation. Their Barrel Constrictor 13 percent ABV barrel-aged imperial stout is no exception, and this SFBW will see them show off eight variants of the beer at their Belmont taproom.
OEC Brewing Tap Takeover: Gourmet Haus Staudt is prepping (among many other planned tap takeovers during SFBW) for one of the rarest offerings in California. Featuring a vast selection of offerings from OEC Brewing of Oxford, CT, OEC is known for their unique spin on sour and wild ales. In addition to the OEC taps (which can be viewed by clicking on the link above), Gourmet Haus will also be tapping two beers by Hill Farmstead.
Cali Centric: Original Gravity in Downtown San Jose will featuring 10 beers from Central Coast breweries such as Central Coast Brewing, Silva Brewing Company, Peter B’s and Mission Trail. Actual beers to be posted prior to the event, so check in with the event link above or on their social media.
Special Bottle Saturday: Looking to stock up on whales for 2019? Jane’s Beer Store in Mountain View is planning a special bottle sale beginning at 11am Saturday, February 2. Check out the link above for the full list of offerings, but you won’t want to miss the special bottles for sale from breweries like Fremont Brewing, Drie Fonteinen, De Garde, Perennial and Allagash.
