Painting and brewing might be different art forms, but for Laughing Monk Brewing, both have a lot to do with its entrance into the San Francisco beer scene.
A brewery-in-planning, Laughing Monk plans to open mid-2015 at 1439 Egbert Ave., joining Speakeasy as the Bayview District’s second brewery. The brewery will focus on Belgian style beers and has debuted a few of its blends at charity events in San Francisco, such as a saison infused with chamomile.
Though still under construction, Laughing Monk’s founding partners, Andrew Casteel and Aaron Hicks, have already been using the brewery’s name to have a positive impact in the Bayview.
The brewery teamed up with local muralist, Shawn Bullen, and Tyra Fennell of the San Francisco Arts Commission, to form the organization, Imprint.City. The group aims to bring more murals to walls within the Bayview District.
In February, Imprint.City hosted two events at All Good Pizza in the Bayview. Laughing Monk poured pints of their AmWit IPA and Chamomile Saison, with proceeds from pint sales going to SF Beautiful, a San Francisco non-profit geared at neighborhood improvement projects within the city.
“As I was getting to know the Bayview and the people in the area, I met [local muralist] Shawn Bullen,” said Casteel. “We were talking about the Bayview and about how it’s kind of the frontier of San Francisco. There’s a lot of industrial space, and if we just added an element of art, we could make it a destination in the city.”
Bullen has been working on beautifying Laughing Monk’s brewery with murals within the brewing space. His murals can be seen around San Francisco on the Boom Boom Room‘s building and on the side of the RadioShack building at 24th St. between Castro and Noe streets.
Though Laughing Monk is still a few months away from opening its brewery doors, Casteel looks forward to establishing more ties with neighborhood merchants to bring a spotlight to the Bayview’s growing food and drink scene. The brewery hopes to host a dinner with a Bayview restaurant in April, the details of which can be obtained as they appear through Laughing Monk’s newsletter and Facebook page.
