New Bay Area beer roundup: refreshing IPAs, sours, saisons, porters

SAN FRANCISCO — With spring in full swing, Bay Area breweries are pumping out new ales to grace your palate. Check out these new beers that hit the taps at local taprooms this week.

East Bay

The Rare Barrel —  The much anticipated release of The Rare Barrel’s Dubious Dawn Sour Beer, from the Dubious Series, has made its grand debut. Featuring a blend of “dark red and golden sour beers,” this beer is aged in tequila barrels containing, “apricots”, “raspberries” and “cacao nibs.” This sour levels off at a 5.8 percent.

San Francisco

Local Brewing Co. — Named after Bernal Heights of San Francisco, Local Brewing Co. has released their new Bernal Equinox Belgian Pale. This ale quenches with flavors like,”white peppercorn,” “stone fruit,” and “lemon verbena.” It tops off at an approachable 5.0 percent.

Another new release is the Inner Sunset dry-hopped Saison. Distinguished by its, “tangerine,” and “peppercorn” hybridization, this Saison is dry-hopped with El Dorado to bring out its fruit essences. It hits the spot at a smooth 6.3 percent alcohol.

For those looking for a little spice in their life, try a pint of the new Outer Sunset Saison. This saison features, “chocolate wheat malts,” and “peppery and spicy character,” said to be derived from the saison yeast. Leaving a lingering burn at 6.4 percent alcohol, this beer will be sure to appease zest-seeking fans.

Cervecería de MateVeza — Perfect timing for spring breakers, is the release of Cervecería de MateVeza’s new Island Tea Beer. Boasting with “Yerba Mate tea leaves,” and “Hawaiian Pineapple,” this beer is sure to cool down party -makers everywhere. It refreshes at a 6.2 percent alcohol.

Social Kitchen and Brewery – Coconuts and white sandy beaches make one think of vacation, but with the new Imaginary Circles Pale Ale from Social Kitchen and Brewery, vacation is now a hand -reach away. Described by brewery representatives as incorporating “smoked coconut,” “applewood” and “vanilla,” it’s no surprise that this ale will be entered in Drake’s Dealership Hop Chef competition April 16. It mellows at a cool 5.7 percent alcohol.

Black Hammer Brewing – Calling all chocolate lovers! Black Hammer Brewing has released their new Perfect Dark Porter. Characterized by its notes of, “chocolate,” and “caramel malt,” this porter is sure to curb the sweet tooth. It satisfies at a 7.8 percent alcohol.

ThirstyBear Organic Brewery — ThirstyBear Organic Brewery has created the new SOMA Wheat beer. Comprised of, “unmalted barley” and “crystal and sterling hops,” this beer satiates at 5 percent.

Named after the Slavic god of Springtime and fertility comes the new Jarrylo from their S.M.A.S.H. Series. This beer tempts with hints of, “banana,” “pear,” and “English pale floor malt.” It levels off at 4.9 percent alcohol.

South Bay

Hermitage Brewery – Love the smell of fresh pine branches? Look no further than Hermitage Brewery’s new release Eureka, from their Single Hop IPA series. With aromas like “pine fruit,”and “black currant,” and “tangerine,” this IPA has been referred to as “Simcoe on steroids,” and packs a refreshing kick at 7 percent alcohol.
