CORRECTION: Anchor’s offerings were misquoted. The beers poured at the festival were Mango Wheat and Anchor Steam, not Dry-Hopped Steam as originally stated.
SAN FRANCISCO — It’s Outside Lands weekend. Beyond the plethora of music, good food and cuisine, it’s also one of the largest music festivals that is famous for its cuisine — veering away from the stereotypical macrobrews served up for $15 a pint at other festivals.
Whether or not you’ve been to Outside Lands, you won’t want to miss out on Beer Lands, which is arguably a beer festival within a music festival.
The dedicated area of Outside Lands will be back for its fifth year in a row, showcasing a wide range of Bay Area and Northern California breweries. The 30 participating breweries will be pouring a minimum of two brews of all styles and flavors throughout the weekend-long festival.
Dave McLean, beer curator for Beer Lands — as well as founder and brewmaster of SF brewing classic, Magnolia — says the 2016 incarnation will be occupying about the same space as last year, while establishing itself as a beer garden getaway within the music festival experience.
“Outside Lands is so good in general about creating this immersive experience,” McLean said. “It’s a good opportunity to sample a wide range of Bay Area and NorCal brewing. It’s a really diverse list… A majority of the beers are from the Bay Area.”
Sierra Nevada will also be bringing back it’s Outside Lands exclusive beer, Outside Lands Saison, a Belgian ale brewed with Pilsner and Maris Otter malts, and German Select hops.
Aside from serving up a huge assortment of finely crafted beers, Beer Lands also gives beer lovers another not-so-obvious benefit as well: the opportunity to hang out before the crowds fill up the festival and chat it up with the brewers.
It’s getting to try a few different craft beers, talk with the brewers and learn something about the beers you’re enjoying that really creates the beer festival atmosphere.
