SAN FRANCISCO — 32 breweries pouring beer at an event with live music and food sounds like the definition of a beer festival. Beer Lands — the popup beer garden within the weekend-long music festival, Outside Lands — showcases California breweries, specifically those from the Bay Area.
For those going to this year’s incarnation of Outside Lands and looking forward to delving into the world of Bay Area cuisine, Beer Lands is a must stop — whether you’re looking to compliment a setlist, or wash down the plethora of Outside Lands’ food offerings. Bay Area staples like 21st Amendment, Drakes, Faction and Iron Springs will be pouring their eclectic brews; as will other California icons such as Firestone Walker, Golden Road and Lost Coast.
But like any top notch beer festival, Beer Lands will also feature some special Outside Lands exclusive beers, courtesy of Bay Area brewing favorites. Here are the three beers you can look forward to trying at this year’s Outside Lands:
Triple Voodoo Brewing — Tryna Wheat
The San Francisco Dogpatch brewery is bringing their Tryna Wheat, a classic Belgian Wheat beer brewed with Belgian Pilsner Malt, white wheat, unmalted wheat and oats; hopped with Hallertau; and spiced with Orange Peel, cracked pink peppercorn and coriander. Head brewer of Triple Voodoo, Phil Meeker, describes the beer as having a “real grainy, earthy flavor as well as full mouthfeel” due to the unmalted wheat presence. According to Meeker, the beer is still fermenting in the conditioner and will be ready (and fresh!) the day of the festival.
Linden Street Brewing — Craft Forty
Craft Forty is a full-bodied, malt-forward Golden Lager that the Oakland-based brewery is bringing to Outside Lands. According to team member, A.J. Tiras, Craft Forty is “an homage to our former youth, listening to cassette tape music in parking lots while financially forced to chug down terribly-made malt liquor in forth bottles before the authorities showed up.” The difference between this beer and the terribly-made malt liquors of their youth is Craft Forty is brewed with Bohemian Pilsner Malt, Northern Brewer hops and Linden Street‘s Bay Area lager yeast — making the appropriately named beer a perfect accompaniment to the weekend long music lineup.
Sierra Nevada — Outside Lands Saison
An Outside Lands tradition, Sierra Nevada is once again bringing its Outside Lands Saison to Beer Lands. A refreshing traditional French Saison, the Outside Lands Saison is a Belgian ale brewed with Pilsner and Maris Otter malts, and German Select hops. Like the other Outside Lands-exclusive brews, the Outside Lands Saison is a quenching addition to the Beer Lands brew lineup festival-goers can grab throughout the weekend.
